10 Characteristics Only Shih Tzu Owners Understand

Would you believe me if I tell you I was so against owning a dog in the past and like what I have mentioned in my first blog about our Coco, it took me so many years of convincing before I finally decided to have one. Since this is my first time to own a dog, I really had to learn so many things and I observed his every move, actions and all. I discovered and learned a lot. Here are some of the most prominent characteristics I (so far) observed.

I cannot say no to his begging eyes, I always wanted to hug him instead.

Every few minutes (10-20 minutes) they will come to you with a toy, bark or lick your feet to let you know they want to play and need some attention.

#5 They need high maintenance because they’re very picky eaters and not to forget grooming because of their double coated hair. **Coco** needs at least once a month visit to his favorite groomer to keep his hair healthy and for us to see his beautiful big brown eyes.

I read when I was still researching for the breed I will choose, that **Shih Tzu** will live from 10-18 years. I actually read some that lived for almost 20 years. So I am happy about that because he will spend many years with us.

**Coco** has many weird sleeping positions, but to me this one is the weirdest and the funniest 😄.

Contrary to what I heard that they are lazy, Shih Tzus are actually full of energy. Just following you around the house, at work and wherever you are is more than enough to wear you out.

This characteristic actually surprised me because I did not read and hear about it. But they are great guard dogs, at least our **Coco**. I feel safe especially at night because he warns me of anything or anyone that he sense is an intruder. He may not be able to protect me by attacking that intruder but at least he warns me ahead of time.

Shih Tzus are very intellectual to the point of being manipulative, lol. I said that because our **Coco** will use his cuteness to get what he wants. He can easily learn what I trained him and can sense who between my husband and I, is the disciplinarian 😁.
